In 2009 I was appointed as one of Arts Council England's new artistic assessors. There are 300 of us, all specialist practitioners in particular art forms, each working to a contract of two years. Our role is to assess the actual artistic work (rather than, say, the business efficiency) of the arts organisations that regularly receive Arts Council funding. The scheme began to operate across the country in January 2010.
